Keep Your Long Island Home Warm This Winter
A few early checks can help your heating system run more reliably when Long Island temperatures fall.
Heating problems become urgent when the weather is already at its coldest. Preparing before winter gives you time to address unusual sounds, weak airflow or uneven temperatures without waiting for a complete loss of heat.
Use these four checks to prepare the system and make your home more comfortable through the heating season.
Schedule Heating Maintenance Before the Coldest Weather
A seasonal visit gives a technician a chance to inspect the heating equipment, controls and visible connections before the system must run for long periods. It can also reveal wear or performance changes that deserve attention.
Start the system early in the season and listen for new sounds. Notice unusual odors, short cycling, slow warm-up or rooms that no longer reach the expected temperature.
Check and Replace the System Filter
A loaded filter can restrict airflow and make a forced-air system work harder. Locate the correct filter, note its size and follow the equipment manufacturer’s replacement schedule.
Check it more often during heavy use or when the home has pets, renovation dust or other conditions that increase airborne debris. Install the replacement in the airflow direction marked on the frame.
Seal Drafts and Protect Your Home’s Heat
Cold air around windows, exterior doors and utility openings can make rooms uncomfortable even when the heating equipment is operating. Replace worn weatherstripping and seal appropriate gaps with materials designed for the location.
Keep supply registers and radiators clear of furniture, curtains and stored items. Check attic or crawl-space insulation where accessible and appropriate for your home.
Test the Thermostat and Watch System Performance
Set the thermostat a few degrees above room temperature and confirm that the heating system starts, distributes heat and shuts down normally. Replace thermostat batteries if the model uses them.
If the reading seems inaccurate, temperatures vary sharply between rooms or the system cycles unusually often, arrange service. Early attention is easier than troubleshooting a no-heat call during a freezing night.
Reliable winter comfort depends on both the heating equipment and the home around it. A seasonal check, clear airflow and attention to early symptoms can reduce avoidable interruptions.
